**![Construction Inspection Checklist App: Pre-Pour, Framing, and Rough-In Templates](https://blog.tasktag.com/hs-fs/hubfs/1%20-%202026-10-22T210623.750.jpg?width=1620&height=1215&name=1%20-%202026-10-22T210623.750.jpg)An inspection checklist only protects you if each item has a photo attached at the moment you answer it.** A checked box says "I looked." A timestamped, location-stamped photo on that line item says what you saw, where, and when. That difference decides who wins when a concrete crack, a framing complaint, or a hidden-wiring dispute shows up months after the work was covered.

A construction photo app with checklists puts the checklist and the evidence in one workflow, so the foreman answers each item and shoots the proof in the same step. This guide gives you copy-ready templates for the three inspections where missing evidence costs the most: pre-pour, framing, and MEP rough-in. It also covers what to look for in the app that runs them.

---

## Why Checklists and Photos Belong in One Workflow

**When checklists and photos live in different places, the photos end up unsorted in a camera roll and the checklist ends up as a form nobody can verify.** Three months later, someone has to match 40 photos to 40 checklist items from memory.

Combining them solves four problems:

- **Proof at the point of decision.** The photo is attached to the exact item it supports, such as "rebar cover at north footing."
- **Accountability.** Each item records who answered it, when, and from where.
- **Speed.** The foreman does one task, not a checklist now and a photo upload later.
- **Reports.** A completed inspection exports as a single document with answers and evidence together.

TaskTag's [field inspection workflow](https://blog.tasktag.com/product/field-inspection-workflow) is built around this pattern. The templates below work in any system, including a paper binder, but they are designed for an app where each line takes a pass/fail answer plus a photo.

---

## How to Use These Templates

**Treat these as starting points. Your plans, specifications, engineer, and local building department set the actual requirements.**

Verify every item against the project drawings, the structural engineer's notes, and the inspector's requirements for your jurisdiction. Adjust the lists, delete what does not apply, and add job-specific items. These templates support your quality process. They do not replace required third-party or municipal inspections.

For each line item, record:

- **Result:** Pass / Fail / N/A
- **Photo:** at least one, taken at the item
- **Notes:** measurement or condition, if relevant
- **Inspector:** name of the person answering
- **Corrective action and re-inspection:** for any Fail

---

## Template 1: Pre-Pour Concrete Inspection

![Template 1: Pre-Pour Concrete Inspection](https://blog.tasktag.com/hs-fs/hubfs/3%20-%202026-10-22T210629.644.jpg?width=600&height=450&name=3%20-%202026-10-22T210629.644.jpg)

**Concrete cannot be un-poured. The pre-pour check is the last chance to see what is about to be buried.**

**Site and subgrade**

- \[ \] Subgrade prepared, compacted, and free of standing water or debris. *Photo: overall subgrade*
- \[ \] Base material and vapor barrier installed per plans. *Photo: barrier lapped and sealed*
- \[ \] Layout and elevations verified against drawings. *Photo: with tape or level in frame*

**Forms**

- \[ \] Forms set to correct dimensions, plumb, and braced. *Photo: each side*
- \[ \] Form release agent applied where required
- \[ \] Edge and control joint locations match plans. *Photo*

**Reinforcement**

- \[ \] Rebar size and spacing match drawings. *Photo: tape measure in frame*
- \[ \] Bars supported on chairs or dobies at correct height. *Photo*
- \[ \] Concrete cover verified per plans. *Photo*
- \[ \] Laps and splices correct length; dowels in place. *Photo*

**Embeds and penetrations**

- \[ \] Anchor bolts, embeds, and hold-downs located and secured per plans. *Photo: each with layout reference*
- \[ \] Sleeves and under-slab plumbing/electrical in place, tested, and inspected where required. *Photo*

**Readiness**

- \[ \] Required municipal or third-party inspection completed and documented. *Photo: signed card or approval*
- \[ \] Mix design, delivery ticket, and slump requirements confirmed
- \[ \] Weather and cure plan confirmed
- \[ \] Access and pump or chute plan confirmed; crew assigned

**Why photos matter here:** After the pour, rebar placement, cover depth, and embed locations cannot be verified without destructive testing. A photo set from the pre-pour inspection is the practical record. See [construction defect claims](https://claude.ai/blog/construction-defect-claims) for why this documentation is the first thing requested in a dispute.

---

## Template 2: Framing Inspection

**Framing hides structural decisions behind drywall. Document connections, openings, and blocking before they are covered.**

**Layout and structure**

- \[ \] Wall layout matches plans; dimensions and plumb verified. *Photo*
- \[ \] Studs, plates, and headers sized and spaced per plans. *Photo: tape in frame*
- \[ \] Beams, posts, and load paths continuous and bearing correctly. *Photo*
- \[ \] Hangers, hold-downs, and connectors installed with specified fasteners. *Photo: close-up of nailing*
- \[ \] Shear wall and bracing details per structural drawings. *Photo*

**Floors and roof framing**

- \[ \] Joist and rafter size, spacing, and bearing correct. *Photo*
- \[ \] Subfloor or sheathing fastened per schedule. *Photo*
- \[ \] Openings framed and headers installed. *Photo*

**Blocking and backing**

- \[ \] Blocking installed for cabinets, grab bars, handrails, TVs, and fixtures. *Photo: with location marked on the wall*
- \[ \] Fireblocking and draft stopping where required. *Photo*

**Penetrations**

- \[ \] Notches and bored holes within allowable limits. *Photo*
- \[ \] Structural members not cut for MEP without approval

**Moisture and exterior**

- \[ \] Sheathing, house wrap, and flashing installed per detail. *Photo: window and door openings*
- \[ \] Window and door rough openings sized and flashed correctly. *Photo*

**Readiness**

- \[ \] Required framing inspection completed and approved. *Photo: signed card*
- \[ \] Open items listed with owner and due date

The blocking photos with wall locations are the ones remodelers and homeowners thank you for later, when someone needs to hang a heavy fixture and wants to know where the backing sits.

## Template 3: MEP Rough-In Inspection (Pre-Drywall)

![Template 3: MEP Rough-In Inspection](https://blog.tasktag.com/hs-fs/hubfs/3%20-%202026-10-22T210635.853.jpg?width=600&height=450&name=3%20-%202026-10-22T210635.853.jpg)

**Pre-drywall is the last chance to document what is inside the walls. Photograph every wall and ceiling cavity before cover-up.**

**Electrical rough-in**

- \[ \] Panel location and circuit layout match plans. *Photo*
- \[ \] Boxes set at correct heights and locations. *Photo*
- \[ \] Wire type, gauge, and routing per plans. *Photo*
- \[ \] Wire protected where it passes through framing. *Photo: nail plates*
- \[ \] Low-voltage and data runs in place. *Photo*

**Plumbing rough-in**

- \[ \] Supply and drain lines sized and routed per plans. *Photo*
- \[ \] Pressure test or required rough test performed and recorded. *Photo: gauge reading*
- \[ \] Fixture locations and rough-in dimensions verified. *Photo: tape in frame*
- \[ \] Pipe supports and protection in place. *Photo*

**HVAC rough-in**

- \[ \] Duct, register, and equipment locations match plans. *Photo*
- \[ \] Ducts sealed and supported. *Photo*
- \[ \] Penetrations through rated assemblies sealed per detail. *Photo*

**General**

- \[ \] Insulation and air sealing details per plans. *Photo*
- \[ \] Required inspections passed and documented. *Photo: signed approval*
- \[ \] Photo set of every wall and ceiling cavity organized by room before close-in

**The wall photo habit:** Shoot each wall with a note or marker on the stud naming the room and wall. That one habit makes the photo set searchable years later when a homeowner calls about a leak or wants to add an outlet.

---

## Add Safety and Daily Checks

**A short daily site inspection builds the habit that makes the larger inspections reliable.** Keep it to 10 items:

- \[ \] Fall protection in place where required
- \[ \] Ladders secured and in good condition
- \[ \] Excavations and trenches protected
- \[ \] Electrical cords and tools in safe condition
- \[ \] Housekeeping: walkways clear, debris controlled
- \[ \] Fire extinguishers accessible
- \[ \] PPE in use
- \[ \] Material storage secure
- \[ \] Site security and signage in place
- \[ \] Weather conditions reviewed

Log a photo only on a fail, so the daily check stays fast.

---

## What to Look for in a Construction Photo App With Checklists

**The right app records evidence automatically and does not rely on workers remembering extra steps.**

**Must-have:**

- **Photo attached to the checklist item,** not uploaded into a separate album
- **Automatic time and GPS stamp** on every photo
- **Custom templates** so you can load the lists above and edit them per project type
- **Pass/fail/N/A with notes** and required photos on failed items
- **Offline capture** that syncs when signal returns, since slabs and basements often have none
- **One-click report** that combines answers, photos, timestamps, and approvals
- **Deficiency tracking** so a failed item becomes an assigned task and closes only after a re-inspection photo
- **Subcontractor access** limited to their own items

**Why GPS-verified crew time belongs next to the checklist:** A signed-off inspection shows what was done. Verified time records show who was on site and for how long. Together they answer the two questions disputes always ask. For how location-verified time works, see [GPS time tracking](https://tasktag.com/features/gps-time-tracking/), and for platform options see [construction time tracking software](https://blog.tasktag.com/construction-time-tracking-software) and [top 5 time tracking apps](https://blog.tasktag.com/top-5-time-tracking-apps).

---

## Turning Failed Items Into Closed Items

**A failed item that is only noted is a future punch list problem. A failed item that is assigned, dated, and re-photographed is closed.**

Workflow for every Fail:

1. Photograph the issue with a measurement or label
2. Assign it to the responsible trade or crew
3. Set a due date before the next trade covers the area
4. Require a correction photo from the same angle
5. A supervisor re-inspects and closes the item
6. The report shows the original failure, the fix, and the close-out

This chain is what makes closeout fast. Items found and fixed during construction never reach the final walkthrough. See [construction project closeout](https://claude.ai/blog/construction-project-closeout) for the closeout process and [construction retainage](https://claude.ai/blog/construction-retainage) for how open items hold up payment.

---

## Who Does Which Inspection

**Assign each inspection to a specific role so nobody assumes someone else did it.**

| Inspection | Typically completed by | Reviewed by |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pre-pour | Foreman or site superintendent | Superintendent, engineer, or inspector as required |
| Framing | Lead carpenter or foreman | Superintendent; building inspector |
| MEP rough-in | Trade foreman | Superintendent; building inspector |
| Daily safety | Foreman | Superintendent weekly |
| Final | Superintendent | Project manager; owner |

Time spent on inspections should be logged to its own cost code so you can see what quality control actually costs per job. Over several jobs, that cost is usually small compared to rework. See [how to win construction bids](https://claude.ai/blog/how-to-win-construction-bids) for using historical cost data in estimates.

---

## Common Mistakes With Inspection Checklists

**Photos taken after the fact.** The foreman checks boxes in the truck at the end of the day and uploads photos from memory. Fix: require photos at the item, from inside the app.

**Too many items.** A 120-line checklist gets rubber-stamped. Fix: keep each inspection under 30 to 40 items and cut anything that is not a real failure risk.

**No owner for Fail items.** The note says "fix later" and nobody does. Fix: every Fail gets an assignee and a due date.

**Missing the cover-up moment.** Inspections done after drywall cannot verify anything. Fix: schedule the inspection as a gate before the next trade starts.

**Paper in the truck.** A binder gets wet, lost, or never entered. Fix: use an app with offline mode so the record exists the moment it is created.

**Subs not held to the same standard.** Your own crew documents everything and subs document nothing. Fix: put photo and checklist requirements in the subcontract. Our guide on [how to negotiate a construction contract](https://claude.ai/blog/how-to-negotiate-a-construction-contract) covers documentation clauses.

## Copy-Ready Rollout Plan

**Week 1: Build templates**

- \[ \] Load the three templates above into your app and edit them for your typical project
- \[ \] Add your jurisdiction's required inspection points
- \[ \] Decide which items require a photo and which allow a note

**Week 2: Train the field**

- \[ \] Walk each foreman through one inspection start to finish on a real job
- \[ \] Teach the wall-labeling and tape-in-frame photo habits
- \[ \] Confirm offline mode works on your worst-signal site

**Week 3: Run it live**

- \[ \] Require inspection completion before the next trade starts
- \[ \] Review the first reports with the foremen and fix confusing items
- \[ \] Track Fail items to close-out

**Ongoing**

- \[ \] Review recurring failures monthly and add training or changes to the process
- \[ \] Log inspection time to its own cost code
- \[ \] Archive completed inspection reports with the job file
