Cost codes are the foundation of every meaningful financial measurement in construction. Without them, a contractor knows how much was spent on a project total — and nothing else. Every cost code system fails if workers don't clock into the right code.

Common Cost Code Mistakes
- Too few codes — the "bucket" problem. One "MEP labor" code for all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work. When MEP runs over budget, no one knows if it's mechanical, electrical, or plumbing. Each sub-trade needs its own code.
- Inconsistent use across projects. Project A uses 09-250 for drywall; Project B uses 900 for all finishes. Historical data across projects is incomparable. Standardize the code library and use it identically across every project.
- Not training workers on code selection. Workers guess at codes or select the first one on the list. Garbage in, garbage out. Train workers on the code library at project kickoff.
